Fig. 22 · Transmission repair

Sometimes you need a repair, not a rebuild.

Solenoid, seal, valve body. I'll tell you when $180 solves it and save you the $4,000.

Not every transmission problem is a full rebuild. The honest diagnosis is: sometimes it's a $250 solenoid and you're back on the road the next day.

Fig. 23 · When a repair is enough

Six fixes that keep you out of a rebuild.

If your transmission hasn't been run without fluid, hasn't overheated to the point the fluid turned varnish-black, and isn't making grinding noise from inside the case, one of these is probably your fix.

Most repairs come off the truck onto my bench for a 30-minute look. A worn valve body looks like this [FIG. 01] and tells you in five seconds whether the rest of the unit is still good.

I. The common fix

Valve body repair · $700 to $1,400

When the valve body is sticking but the clutches are still healthy, I can pull it, clean the bores, replace the worn solenoids, and put it back in. 1 to 2 days. No rebuild needed, no $4,000 bill. I keep the old valve body on the bench so you can see exactly what I found.

Common on 6L80, 8L90, 68RFE, 5R55, 4L60-E after 120k.

II. Solenoids & seals

$1 to $2. same day

Shift solenoid skipping a gear. Pan-gasket leak on the driveway. External seal weeping. Most of these leave the shop by the next afternoon.

III. TCC & sensors

$150 to $900

Highway shudder is usually a TCC solenoid, not a torque converter. Check-engine-only is usually a speed sensor. Half the time a rubbed wiring harness.

The no-upsell pledge

If your transmission doesn't need rebuilt, I'll tell you. I sent three people home last month with a $180 fix instead of a $4,000 rebuild.

Quoted my transmission less than any other shop around. Completed it in a few days and now my vehicle runs smooth. Kept me up to date with the entire progress and explained what was being done.

Repair questions I get

Before you call.

How do I know if it's a repair or a rebuild?

Tear it down and look. That's what diagnosis is for. $80-120 and applied to whatever repair you choose.

How long will a repair take?

External seals and solenoids: same day or next day. Valve body work: 1 to 2 days. Way faster than a full rebuild.

Is the warranty the same as a full rebuild?

I warranty my repairs for 2 years on parts and labor, same as a full rebuild. Parts I don't touch aren't covered. That's the honest line.
